Windwheels and power transmission lines in Germany
What is the difference between transmission and distribution lines ?
  • Transmission lines power plants to substations (HV 69 kV up to 765 kV) bi directional
  • Distribution lines bring electricity from substations to end users (LV 4KV and 69KV) traditionally been mono directional not initially designed for distributed generation and bi directional flow
  • Grid is (generally) a passive system (limited data to accommodate distributed generation)

Delivery of electric power

  • only large consumers are fed directly from distribution
    voltages
  • most utility customers are connected to a transformer
  • transformer reduces the distribution voltage to the low voltage used by lighting and interior wiring systems

Transmission and Distribution Lines

Electricity Grid Schematic
  • HV Primary distribution voltage is ‘medium voltage’ (2kV-35kV)
  • LV Secondary distribution connects to non industrial premises (220- 240v)
